media lab move

MIT is setting up a new Media Lab in Taiwan. Hope it works out better than their last two ventures in India and Ireland, muddled by too much government involvement. In a comparison of asian workers and their western counterparts, the issue of lack of creativity in asian cultures comes up yet again.

Was an apparent lack of creativity among Asians actually put on the table for discussion? From our experience at the MIT MediaLab, this didn't seem to be an issue as there seemed to be equal and consistent creative output from all groups. Is the focus of the Taiwan extension different?

I don't know if it was necessarily discussed. Commented on numerous times, yes. As for asian students in the MIT MediaLab vs asian students in asian countries, there is quite a difference. Most of MIT's asian population consists of students whose education follows a western model i.e. international school, grew up in the states. Different kind of pressure in terms of academic excellence. More towards ingenuity and innovation than memorization. Thinking outside the box :)
